ST Modular - Delay v2

Delay v2 - a very simple 2HP Analog Vintage Delay

It is based on the PT2399 chip, but doesn't have the glitchy artifacts on long delay times. The feedback is also set to have a very moderate effect. Thus this delay is very easy to use. No more speaker crashing feedback loops and no crackling lo-fi noises while increasing delay time.

The module has a LEVEL potentiometer to adjust the level of the output. At higher levels you will get a very nice and subtle amount of distortion. The delay time may be set with the TIME potentiometer. Surprisingly the FEEDBACK knob gives you the possibility to increase the amount of how often the delay will be repeated. There is no dry/wet option here, but you can use the FEEDBACK pot to adjust the delay amount added to the signal.

Give II - 12 HP Classic Analog VCO with additional Frequency Divider and Waveform Mixing Options

Youtube videos can be found here, here and here. It is not a substitution for GIVE I, but rather another version as it is based on the same core circuit. Actually both versions complement each other very well building a powerful complex oscillator. The VCO provides five outputs, the last four of them can be mixed with an integrated mixer: PULSE, SAW, TRIANGLE, 3x PULSE SUB & NOISE

 

Patching a voltage/audio source into FM you can frequency modulate the oscillator. Incoming voltages can be attenuated with FM CV. In the middle of the module you will find the PWM potentiometer. Here you may change the pulse width of the pulse wave. The width may also be controlled via external voltage with the PWM jack and the PWM CV attenuator.

 

Just like all other classic analog VCOs GIVE II also tracks one volt per octave with the help of the 1V/OCT input jack. Each wave can also be hardsynced by an external wave patched to the SYNC jack.

 

In addition to the classic VCO functions GIVE II also provides an integrated frequency divider. The MIX output jack will not only supply the waveforms SAW, TRIANGLE and NOISE, but also provides up to 3 sub octaves derivated from the PULSE waveform. The volume of each suboctave may be adjusted with the potentiometer SUB 1-3. ORIG will adjust the volume of the original PULSE signal. Using the switch ORIG SQU you can flip the SQUARE waveform.

ST Modular - Boba Fat v1

Boba FAT is a dual voice bass- and kick drum generator. The first voice "soft mallet" generates smooth and warm sounding bass and sub-bass sounds, whereas the second voice "hard mallet" is rather considered to create kick or tom sounds. Here and here are Youtube videos about it.

 

The eight potentiometers on the left control the soft mallet generator. PITCH controls the frequency, LEVEL the volume and BOOST adds low frequencies turning it clockwise and reduces them turning it counterclockwise. MOD RATE and MOD ATT control an internal LFO and its attenuation. The LFO will affect the frequency of the soft mallet voice only. Additionally the LFO can by synced to the incoming gate or trigger.

 

TRIG SLEW acts as some kind attack control and reduces transients making it very easy to create very smooth sub-bass drums. DECAY and RELEASE control the duration of the sounds being amplified by an internal VCA. PRESENCE changes the prominence of the sound.

 

The three potentiometers on the very right affect the hard mallet generator. PITCH, LEVEL and BOOST have the same function as for the soft mallet part. PITCH will have a greater effect from 12 to 5 o´clock. Changes from 7 to 12 o´clock are rather subtle, but are set on purpose to add fine nuances with LEVEL and BOOST there.

 

OUT VOL changes the overall loudness of both drums. GATE accepts any gate or trigger signal to activate the generators. A signal at only at GATE will trigger both mallets. If a additional trigger is inserted to GATE S, GATE only triggers soft mallet and GATE S triggers hard mallet separately. This way you can have indivual drum tracks for both mallets creating very interesting rhythms.

 

A CV signal at MOD CV will override the internal LFO and CV control soft mallet pitch. It doesn’t exactly track 1V/oct, but you will be able to play some melodies. A trigger, gate or clock signal at MOD RST lets you reset the internal LFO with an external signal. Any CV signal at VARI will slightly alternate the volume or generate additional triggers for the hard mallet circuit (depending on the incoming voltage). This gives you endless ways of creating fine grooves and interesting rhythms.

 

The circuit was designed to easily go into distortion and you may be careful using LEVEL and BOOST controls. Boba Fat definitely needs some fine adjustments in order to find the sweet spots. If you feed the GATE input with a trigger at audio rate you can also use BOBA FAT as a weird sound generator or drone machine.

ST Modular - Workbench v1

WORKBENCH is a true 0HP USB powered Eurorack module that combines various utilities:

 

Multiple

1 to 3 multiple with one inverted output. The multiple is normalized to the swap unit of the module.

 

LFO

The LFO provides a triangle and square wave and can be reset by an external gate or clock signal. The LFO signal can be attenuated with the slider pot and its rate may be varied with the RATE potentiometer. An inverted copy of the triangle wave is normalized to channel A1. An inverted copy of the square wave is normalized to channel B1. These connections are independent from the LFO attenuator and may be interupted by patching a cable into the channel A1 or B1 input or by the normalization selection switches. You can choose to normalize the LFO or a fixed voltage of 0V to +5V adjustable with the VOLTAGE knob for all channels at once.

 

Attenuator/Mixer

WORKBENCH has four channels A1, A2 and B1 and B2. Any signal (audio or CV) patched into the inputs are attenuated by the slider pots. The channels of each section are daisy-chained, thus they can be mixed or the second channel can act as an offset (CV). The normalization switch selects which voltage will be fed into the input if no cable is being patched (LFO or fixed voltage 0V to +5V).

 

Fader

The Fader mixes between two sources with a single slider. Both channel sections A and B are mixed into a fader circuit, if no cable is inserted into their outputs and the fader inputs. The fader output can be attenuated with the LVL knob.

 

Swap

The Swap unit exchanges the destination of one or two sources with the push of a button. This way you can route two signals to the corresponding destination of the other input. Anything patched into the Mult will also be multiplied to the Swap inputs of nothing is patched here.

 

USB Power

WORKBENCH is powered by standard USB power (+5V) and is fully compatible with your Eurorack system. You can choose to power it with a Mini B, Micro B or Type C USB cable. You can solder all USB connect or just one of them, if you have a favorite USB cable you want to use.

ST Modular - Euro Kastle v2

Euro Kastle - 10 HP Eurorack version of the Bastl Instruments Kastle Synth

It has all the functionality of the Kastle 1.5 with some tiny amendments to fit the Eurorack format. OSC mode and Rungler mode may be changed via switch instead of patching cables and you only have one input/output per functionality instead of 2 or 3 on the desktop synth. Though it has a Waveshape CV attenuator which is not available on the original Kastle.

 

Although it is highly recommended to buy Bastl´s desktop version, you don´t need to purchase the original in order to build the EuroKastle. You may completely source the parts by yourself. Kindly note that there is no AVR ISP header on the PCB. You need to flash the Attiny85 ICs before they are put into the IC sockets (e.g. using a breadboard). You can use any AVR ISP programmer to complete the programming process. It runs on regular Eurorack power supply units.

ST Modular - Renemix v1

0HP 6 Channel Mixer, Fader and CV Source and Offset

RENEMIX has 6 individual channels with a fader potentiometer each. If a signal is patched into the channel you can attenuate its signal. If no cable is patched into the input there will be +5V until +10V available at the output, which of course can also be attenuated. The Voltage Range can be set for all channels equally with the VOLTAGE pot. A channel without a CV input singal can offset other channels of the same group (A or B).

 

Channels 1-3 are summed at the OUT A jack. Channels 4-6 are summed at the OUT B jack. All Channels are mixed at the Mix Out Jack. Here you may fade between Channels 1-3 and 4-6 using the A/B Fade potentiometer in the middle of the module.

RENELFO has two LFOs that can be reset by a clock/trigger signal. Each LFO produces either a triangle or a square wave selectable via switch. In the mid position of the switch the LFO is deactivated. You may change the LFO´s rate with the help of a dedicated potentiometer.

RENEMULT is a 0HP utility module consisting of two 1 to 3 multiples and two swap units.

ST Modular - Dirty Dan

3 Channel Vactrol-Based Analog Filter & Distortion. Dirty Dan lives up to his name! Dan is dirty, raw and snotty. Check out the Youtube video. The module has three input jacks. The first two inputs are directly connected to the vactrol filter. The third input first goes through an additional diode-distortion circuitry and is then connected to the vactrol filter. Each input jack has a dedicated volume control potentiometer. Hence you may use Dirty Dan also as a Dirty Mixer. The amount of distortion for channel IN 3 can be set with the DIST potentiometer. Additionally soft and hard clipping may be activated with the switches DIST SOFT and DIST HARD. It´s best to use a sine wave to hear the differences between the clipping modes. The distorted signal can be taken from the DIST OUT jack separately and is then being disconnected from the vactrol filer and the other two inputs respectively the OUT jack. This allows you to process the distorted audio with external modules.

 

The filter itself is vactrol-based and has its own nature. The sound varies depending on the vactrols being used. It´s fine to solder retail vactrols like the VTL5C series, but the fun starts when DIY vactrols are being used. The sound from the inputs will go through a high pass filter, that can be set with the HIGH PASS potentiometer.

Also a low-pass filter will take effect. This can be controlled with the CUTOFF pot. This pot is not called low-pass as you might expect, because the HIGH PASS settings directly influence the CUTOFF pot. If the HIGH PASS knob is fully counter-clockwise, CUTOFF acts as a classic low-pass filter knob. If you turn HIGH PASS clockwise the CUTOFF knob will also act as a high-pass filter turning it further than 12 o´clock. This way you can blend between low-pass and high-pass with one knob, the CUTOFF knob.

 

Either low-pass or high-pass may be CV controlled. A third CV input controls both at the same time. The level of control voltage for CV H/L may be varied with the CV H/L attenuator potentiometer.

 

The FDBK potentiometer sets the amount of audio being fed back into the filter circuitry providing a nice resonance to the signal. The range of feedback amount can be set with a trimmer on the back of the PCB.

ST Modular - Werner

10HP Modification of Émilie Gillet´s „Ripples“ Filter
Actually its a Franz´d Ripples, if you like.

Just like Franz, Werner is a filter with an internal mixer and LFO.
It is not as buttery as Franz, but still one of the best filters around.
It has all the functionality of the original Ripples module, but also provides a 3-channel MOOG CP3 transistor based  mixer and an LFO with Triangle, Square and inverted Triangle outs, that are normalized to CUTOFF and Q.
These connections are interrupted as soon as external CV is plugged into the corresponding CV inputs.

The small trimmer potentiometers CV/FREQ and CV/FM will attenuate the amount of the LFO voltage affecting the filter frequency.
CV/FM is a bipolar attenuverter (positive and negative).
CV/Q will set the amount of CV affecting the resonance.

If you want to switch off the LFO, set CV/FM to mid position (12 o´clock) and CV/FREQ and CV/Q fully counter clockwise.
Connections: LFO Triangle Wave --> CV/FREQ, LFO Square Wave --> CV/FM, LFO Inverted Triangle Wave --> CV/Q There is also an LFO RESET input in order to restart the LFO cycle.
This way you can synchronize the CUTOFF movements to a rhythmical pattern.

ST Modular - Rocinante´s Gate

Rocinante´s Gate is not a classical low-pass gate (LPG) using vactrols, but goes way beyond that providing an adjustable envelope to control the "gate" through an analog filter.
Sending a gate or trigger signal into the GATE INPUT will create these envelope shaped sounds you know from other LPGs.

The LOWPASS knob adjusts the range of frequencies being affected by the gate.
If you turn it fully counter clockwise the whole frequency spectrum will be gated. Turning it clockwise will slowly add low frequencies to the gated singal until the whole spectrum is not affected anymore.

ENV AMT sets the amount of how much the internal envelope affects the low-pass gate.
RISE sets the time how long it will take the sound to go from silent to the loudest level.
Just like the time it takes an LED inside of a vactrol to start lighting to its full potential.
DECAY controls how long it takes to go from an intial peak to the "gate-phase" level. The length of this phase is varied by the LENGTH potentiometer.
Finally FALL changes the time your sound will need to return to silence after the "gate-phase". Just like the time it takes an LED inside of a vactrol to shut down.
RESONANCE sets the amount of filtered audio being fed back into the filter input. It can´t go into self-oscillation, but is able to create very crunchy and juicy overtones when turning clockwise.
The internal Trigger Generator is being controlled with TRIG RATE and the RE-TRIG/LOOP SWITCH.
Adjust the rate of the trigger and apply the singal to either a re-trigger circuitry that repeats the "gate-phase" as long as a gate signal is being applied or to a loop functionality that will create cycles of gates without an external gate or trigger. The ENV/INV SWITCH enables you to alternatively route an inverted envelope to the low-pass filter. This way you may create "ducking" or "side-chained" sounds.

An internal triangle LFO can be routed via the LVL ATT attenuator to vary the amount of envelope that is being passed to the gate.
The LFO will be deactivated if you turn the LVL ATT attenuator fully counter-clockwise or if you use an external signal to control the envelope amount by patching a CV signal into LVL CV.

In addition to the Audio IN and OUT jacks you may take the signals of the internal envelope and LFO from the ENV OUT and LFO OUT to controll external devices.
In combination with the loop function Rocinante´s Gate is not only a Low-Pass-Gate, but also an LFO and ADSR Generator.

ST Modular - Oberhausen

OBERHAUSEN is a CEM3340 based Dual Voltage Controlled Analog Oscillator designed to create a wide range of complex waveforms.
It wasn't designed to offer the most perfect waveforms, but definitely ones with lots of character and grit.
OBERHAUSEN features two principle oscillators and two modulation oscillators. Both principal oscillators offer five different waveforms.
Each waveform´s level can be adjusted with a dedicated volume slide potentiometer and is available at a separate output jack.
The sum of the OSC1 and OSC2 waveforms can be blended either manually with the large potentiometer in the middle of the module or via CV and is available at the main OUT socket.
Each sum is also supplied at the OSC1 and OSC2 output jacks separately (after BLEND).

SUB - Two Sub-octave waves based on the SAWTOOTH waveform. They can be activated individually with the SUB -1 and SUB-2 switches.
PULSE - PULSE waveform with adjustable PULSE-WIDTH via PW knob or CV with a dedicated attenuator PWM CV.
TRI/SAW - Either a TRIANGLE or SAWTOOTH waveform according to the TRI/SAW switch.
TONE - Accentuates either low or high frequencies of all OSC1 waveforms.
FM - FM input for either EXPONENTIAL or LINEAR FM, adjustable via FM switch (mid position is off).
V/OCT - 1V per octave input and a precision duplicate output of the incoming CV signal for further external processing.
FRONT PANEL CALIBRATION & GAIN - A trimmer potentiometer for V/OCT tuning and OSC GAIN is located on the front side of the module.

OSC2 (Principal Oscillator)
TRI/SAW - Either a TRIANGLE or SAWTOOTH waveform according to the TRI/SAW switch.
PULSE - PULSE waveform with adjustable PULSE-WIDTH via PW knob or CV with a dedicated attenuator PWM CV. OSC1´s PWM CV input is normalized to the OSC2 pulse-width modulation input.
TIMBRE - Buchla inspired timbre generator. The timbre setting can be changed with the TIMBRE knob or via the CV input with an attenuator.
SINE - Pure and analog SINE wave.
FM - Either EXPONENTIAL or LINEAR FM, adjustable via FM switch (mid position is off). Can be generated internally or via external CV.
FM VCA - The FM input´s amplification can be controlled via an internal VCA. As soon as a jack is plugged into the FM VCA input jack FM modulation will only be applied in accordance to an incoming CV signal (such as an LFO or Envelope Generator).
OSC SYNC - OSC2 can be loosely or tightly synced to OSC1.
OVERLOAD - Feedback Distortion with Clipping LED for all OSC2 waveforms.
V/OCT - Separate 1V per octave input. OSC1´s 1V/OCT signal is multiplied via a precision buffer and normalized to OSC2´s 1V/OCT input, if no jack is present at the OSC2 V/OCT input. This routing can also be deactivated with the V/OCT INV switch. Additionally the normalized V/OCT signal can be inverted and routed to OSC2, if the V/OCT INV switch is in the down position.

FM OSC (Modulation Oscillator)
FM OSC only modulates OSC2´s frequency. The RATE can be set with the FM RATE knob. The oscillator´s waveform can be changed from TRIANGLE to OFF to SQUARE WAVE with the FM switch. The amount of modulation applied can be adjusted with the FM CV attenuator, if no jack is plugged into the FM input jack. An LED indicates if FM modulation is active taking any FM VCA modulation into account. With the help of the the FM switch the modulation type can be set to either exponential or linear.

MOD OSC (Modulation Oscillator)
The MOD OSC is a low frequency oscillator that internally controls BLEND CV, OSC2 TIMBRE CV and OSC1 PWM CV (which is normalized to OSC2 PWM CV). Its RATE can be adjusted with the MOD knob and the final depth is set by the destination CV attenuators BLEND CV, PWM CV and TIMBRE CV. The oscillator´s waveform can be changed from TRIANGLE to OFF to SQUARE WAVE with the MOD switch.

MIX & BLEND
In order to mix both principal oscillators and their waveforms OBERHAUSEN features two 4-channel mixers and a additional blend mixer. With the help eight dedicated slide potentiometers each waveform´s level can be set. Additionally you can blend between OSC1 and OSC2 either manually, via CV at the BLEND input jack or internally with the MOD OSC and BLEND attenuator.
