Microphonic Playground is the newest addition in our series of sound design instruments. Like its bigger sister, the Microphonic Soundbox, it's a playground for sonic exploration of any kind. It can also be your inexpensive entry into the Soundbox world before you possibly upgrade later.It works through body sound transmission on basis of a contact microphone. In comparison to airborne sound transmission (via a microphone), all sounds created on the box can be listened to in a very intimate and direct way. Imagine it like listening to the materials from the inside, very much in an ASMR way.The difference to the Microphonic Soundbox are two things:1) It is passive, has no active amplification and needs no power supply.2) It's an open playground with no audio sources or objects built into it, so you are free to attach everything to it what you can imagine.To get you started with ideas we now offer a variety of add-ons, that can be used with both the Microphonic Soundbox and the Microphonic Playground.The unit has an audio input and an output. Its audio output can be amplified by the external input of a Microphonic Soundbox and therefore act as an extension. Or it can be amplified by any pre-amplifier, mixing desk or audio interface. Multiple Playgrounds can be cascaded in series. Play it on its own, or extend your Microphonic Soundbox with one or two Playgrounds and some of the new add-ons.You're free to use it as a platform for sonic experimentation or just convert it into a Bass Kalimba, for example, and leave it that way. The Microphonic Soundbox is an instrument for experimental sound creation. It features a resonant wooden body equipped with contact microphones, battery-powered low-noise preamps and a variety of sound-generating surfaces, including springs, rods, textured panels and a kalimba. Use it standalone to create textures and samples or pair it with delay and loop-based effects for evolving soundscapes.The Instrument features a range of playable surfaces and objects that allow the creation of unheard sounds and textures. The main components are:• Two metal rods – you can excite them with a stick or similar to get bell-like sounds, or play them with a bow to create ethereal–metallic tones. Pitching recordings down reveals deep metallic drones.• Three metal springs – pluck, pull or whip them to produce vintage reverb-like spring sounds.• Sandpaper surface – scratch it with different objects and materials to create sounds ranging from soft whispering to harsh scraping noises.• Kalimba with 5 strips – play harmonic melodies or use the freely tunable mechanism to explore microtonal tunings. Transposing these recordings down can create low bass patterns.The Soundbox is designed to be modular, featuring M3 threaded strips that allow additional objects to be attached using thumb screws.To pick up the vibrations created by the surfaces and objects, two contact microphones are built into the instrument. One is placed at the centre for the kalimba, rods, springs and sandpaper. Noisefoc is an experimental Oscillator, good for noise and Pan Sonic style buzz sounds. It's nice as a pure sound source or as a base for Hi-Hat and percussion sounds. Noisefoc is a great learning project, in the manual the basic parts and their functions are explained. It is based around three CMOS NAND gates as oscillators, controlled by potentiometers and a light dependent resistor (LDR). There's an optical representation of the frequencies via LEDs, two mixing circuits (different sound via diode or resistor mixing) to mix the oscillators and a power starving function which makes the device completely out of control. VCO-1 (v1.4) is a purely analogue VCO for the modular Eurorack system. It can complemented by EXP-1 Expander module to add many functions like Sync, lin. D3MIX by Maffez is a passive triple level-module that lets you route signals between different paths in a clever way.First, your signal is routed between ground and a point "b", allowing you to cover simple tasks like signal starvation, attenuation, splitting and passive mixing. With creative patching you can also do some pretty interesting things like asymmetric modulations, which is illustrated and explained in more detail in the manual.Another mode lets you control between individual channels and a common "node", creating multiples in a flash, realising a 3-1 mixer or a 1-9 distributor. Farb Highpass is an analog transistor ladder highpass filter, and features a distinct circuit from the classic lowpass ladder. We tweaked the circuit and added CV-able resonance to the feedback path.We also added a Tilt EQ. Farbfolder is an analog wavefolder for Eurorack, designed to add harmonically related overtones to an audio signal.We have always been fascinated with analogue effects circuits, and we love the way their quirks and nonlinearities inspire us to find new sounds.Farbfolder does this weird and wonderful trick of folding up the wave at the zero points, "squaring" a sine off with more and more sinusoid edges, thus adding odd harmonics.This module is excellent at adding rich harmonics to a basic waveform. The MAT 16X8 is an extremely compact ultra light audio and MIDI interface for mobile live setups, hardware synthesizers, drum machines, modular systems and external effects units. Pocket-sized MIDI controller with built in Accelerometer!The 8mu is a pocket-sized MIDI controller (slightly smaller than a credit card!) with eight faders that can send messages via MIDI. The 8mu also has a built in accelerometer which measures how the device is being held. This creates eight more control signals, mapped to gestures like “lift the front” or “turn me over”. There are four tiny buttons along the top edge, which can be configured to send MIDI notes (like a keyboard) or control signals.MIDI data is sent via a 3.5mm TRS MIDI output, which can be Type A or Type B, and via USB-C. Only standard USB data lines are used, so it should work on any USB computer with an adaptor. The device is also powered via USB. 8mu can store 8 banks of CC settings which can be accessed using the left and right buttons on each side of the device.8mu has a web editor where you can edit all the settings: Launch the 8mu Editor, and there is a quickstart guide printed on the back or get a quickstart PDF by the buttons below.The 8mu design was inspired by the 16n project but the hardware is quite different.
