XVCO TWO is essentially the Roland 100M VCO adapted to Euro. There are individual outputs for ramp, square and triangle - an improvement on the original. The six position rotary switch for octaves gives the oscillator plenty of range, with a pitch control to fine tune. An internal LFO (thanks MC202) can be used to introduce FM and/or PWM. Super!We’ve spent a lot of time tweaking the levels of the waveforms relative to 0V to take into account Euro’s +/-12V supply (instead of the 100M’s +/-15V supply). Care has been taken to set XVCO TWO so that it needs only minimal tweaking of the trimmers for scaling. The SEEDS is a complex powerful 8 bit oscillator and can be used as a complete synthvoice.On the sound-design side you might notice some 90's popular music influences. There are two reasons for that. First of all; those sounds are a natural match for the rather modest (8 bit, 16MHz) Atmel chip on the Arduino Nano we're using. That music was made using digital synthesizers using the processors available at the time, and those had to make the most of the chips available at the time, which were quite comparable to the Nano. The second reason is that those sounds are a lot of fun. Once that link became clear it became more a of a guiding principle than a potential problem; it seems more sensible to lean into such links than it is to resist them.The Arduino in the SEEDS kit is already programmed, but in case you need to re-install the firmware you need the Arduino IDE installed on your computer and install the CH340 driver to communicate with the Arduino Nano. Chord Organ is the easiest way to get chords from a modular synth!• It's perfectly possible to create chords on a modular synth, but its a pain - lots of tuning and messing about. I wanted to create something as simple as a home organ with chord buttons. Chord Organ is exactly that; the top knob chooses a chord shape, the bottom a root note.• The full story of Chord Organ, including how it was inspired by a Bontempi Organ found in the street, is in this article over on Medium.• Chord Organ and Radio Music are identical modules; you can convert one to the other by installing new firmware over USB - details on how to install the firmware - and go back just as easily.• This video shows what you can do with a Chord Organ in a simple little case. 1) Radio Music is a virtual radio module, so it behaves a bit like a radio. It is designed to be a source of unexpected audio, not a drum loop player or a sample mangler. That said, plenty of people enjoyed it for playing drum loops or mangling samples.2) Radio Music has been a popular DIY project since 2014, and has been used by Chris Carter, Russell Haswell, Richard Devine, and Robin Rimbaud.3) In 2017, the module's firmware was completely rewritten and updated, bringing new features including pitch shifting, .wav file support and a new way to configure settings on the module. You can download the latest firmware here, which will run on any Radio Music module.4) On the same site you can configure your Radio Music, changing various internal settings.5) It's a well documented project, with a lengthy Radio Music Wiki and an active issues list for people seeking help with a build.6) The wiki also contains a huge suggested audio bank containing lots of interesting things.7) Like a radio, the module works on a series of banks and stations. Each of the 16 banks can contain many different stations. Each station is an audio file stored in a folder on the SD card. Choose a bank by pressing and holding the RESET switch. Choose a station by turning the STATION knob or plugging a voltage into Station.8) Because the audio streams from the SD card, it can handle long files easily. In the default setting, it switches between long recordings just as if they were radio stations — as if the audio was playing in the background.9) Radio Music runs on a Teensy 3.1 (or 3.2) microcontroller, which is programmed by USB and runs a very well documented Arduino-like language, so it's easy to hack.10) There are multiple alternative firmwares for Radio Music documented in the github, and on Voltage Control Lab including:- Chord Organ is just an alternative firmware for Radio Music, but is also available as a separate module. There are hundreds of analog synthesizer VCFs, but only a few core designs. You've got your Moog transistor ladder and imitators that use diodes or other substitutes; you've got your two-pole state variable filter, maybe cascaded to get additional poles; and that's about it. Your grandmother was making electronic music with these designs in the 1960s, and not much has happened since. There are a few more options available in digital and semi-digital (such as switched-capacitor) architectures, but most analog designers have given up trying to create really new filters. Instead, they compete on how well they can imitate or clone specific "vintage" filters.The North Coast Synthesis MSK 007 Leapfrog is new and different, with a sound all its own. The fifth-order "leapfrog" core topology, with five integrators and multiple feedback loops, originates in scientific work more recent than the 1960s and as far as we know never before available in a modular synth VCF. The near-elliptic response curve has an extremely sharp cutoff, with ripple in the passband and nulls in the stopband at frequencies chosen to be musically relevant.Sweep the cutoff and hear each harmonic pop into existence and wobble around before the next one arrives. Choose a timbre, and the temperature compensated volt per octave tracking will keep it consistent across the frequency range. Change it up with exponential and linear frequency modulation. The MSK 010's Wien-bridge oscillator cores produce low-frequency sine waves natively, in a fully analog way with a minimum of harmonic distortion. There are no glitches from waveshaping or stair-steps from insufficiently filtered digital-to-analog conversion. Modulate synthesis parameters with these for smoothly evolving timbres and mind-expanding soundscapes. Because the cores are fully independent and will not synchronize, a patch using multiple LFOs will not repeat its modulation state for a long time, if ever.Choose one of three variants of this module, each with its own set of eight nominal frequencies and cycle times. There are no duplicate or near-duplicate frequencies between different variants, so with two or three, you get the full benefit of a larger modulation palette. North Coast's complex VCO is comfortable on a journey to the East or the West, while providing a stable foundation at home in any Eurorack. The module contains two triangle-core VCOs, each with four waveforms and standard V/octave control. As basic VCOs running independently these can be the heart of a traditional subtractive East Coast synthesizer. But the Middle Path's oscillators can also be used together, with or without sync, to drive its unique multi-output Gilbert-style sine shaper. The shaper, which can also take external input, offers wave shaping, distortion, folding, phase modulation including through-zero, and imitation stereo. These effects take the sound into West Coast territory.The design emphasis is on harmonious combination of simple principles. The exponential converter uses premium analog multipliers and a transistor array to ensure temperature stability without fiddly adjustments or hard-to-control "tempco" resistors; it should provide consistent tracking, and especially between the two oscillators, without needing to warm up. The triangle cores are intrinsically frequency-accurate without needing extra circuitry to compensate for reset time. The sine shaper includes our own novel quadrature modification which can be used to generate a stereo signal or in combination with other modules to create frequency shift effects. Operat is an analog complex oscillator with a single core and several modulations inputs that makes a compact size complex oscillator when pairing it with the external gear. The core offers four different waveforms with Thru-zero FM/PM plus symmetry control over the modulation.
