Starting out with Eurorack synthesizers can feel overwhelming, there’s a lot to learn and if you’re diving into DIY kits, there’s even more to consider. To help you find your way through the essentials, we’ve gathered the most important things you need to know, from the basic tools for assembling synth DIY kits to the core electronic concepts that will help you better understand your modules and machines.

Eurorack Start
There are two main ways to start your journey into modular synthesis:
using a semi-modular synth, or
building a Eurorack system from scratch.
Semi-modular synths are plug-and-play — no case or power supply required — making them an easy entry point.
If you prefer full flexibility, you can start right away with a Eurorack case, which lets you choose from the full range of available modules. Just remember: you’ll need a case with a bipolar power supply.

A Loving Tribute to the MS 20 Filter.This OTA Voltage Controlled Filter uses the same filter structure as the venerable Korg MS 20 Filter. The filter is switchable between Lowpass and Hi Pass modes, and features an updated diode gain stage in the resonance section. This circuit was adapted by Sagittronics, who does excellent work.The VCF will overdrive and distort in both the HP and LP modes, and the resonance can self-oscillation. As with the MS 20 Filter, the Low Pass slope is 12dB/octave and the High Pass slope is 6dB/octave. The CV input is an attenuverter, allowing for dynamic control-voltage of the cutoff.All jacks, knobs, and other components are soldered directly to the PCB. This is an easy to build VCO with a really extensive documentation and explanation of the circuit. Excellent learning kit!The mki x es.EDU VCO is the first educational DIY kit in this series. It is an analog sawtooth-core oscillator with a reasonably accurate volt/octave tracking, made from just a handful of basic components. Low profile Rails are smaller and lighter than the standard ones. The basis is the same as Type A standard but without the whole back.Rail (one piece, threaded strip not included) for building DIY Eurorack cases. 84 HP = 427mm, 104 HP = 529mm, 114 HP = 579mm, 126 HP = 640mm, 168 HP = 854mm, 196 HP = 996mm.Type A rails feature a lid, which holds your modules in place so they cannot move up and down.For building your case you also might need some additionals: threaded strips and M3 screws holding your modules and M5 screws for mounting the rails (we have various types of screws here). As an alternative to the M3 threaded strips you can also use M3 slide nuts.The hole where the M5 screw sits later has no threading - an M5 screw will carve its way when you insert them. Alternatively you could use a tapping tool, but it's not really necessary.
