Microphonic Playground is the newest addition in our series of sound design instruments. Like its bigger sister, the Microphonic Soundbox, it's a playground for sonic exploration of any kind. It can also be your inexpensive entry into the Soundbox world before you possibly upgrade later.It works through body sound transmission on basis of a contact microphone. In comparison to airborne sound transmission (via a microphone), all sounds created on the box can be listened to in a very intimate and direct way. Imagine it like listening to the materials from the inside, very much in an ASMR way.The difference to the Microphonic Soundbox are two things:1) It is passive, has no active amplification and needs no power supply.2) It's an open playground with no audio sources or objects built into it, so you are free to attach everything to it what you can imagine.To get you started with ideas we now offer a variety of add-ons, that can be used with both the Microphonic Soundbox and the Microphonic Playground.The unit has an audio input and an output. EXP-1 (v1.3) is an expander module for our analogue Eurorack oscillator VCO-1. It adds an LFO (bi-polar LED) with two waveforms (square, triangle) and various modulation targets, sync, lin. FM, wave morphing, an additional triangle output etc. Together with VCO-1 it is a complex oscillator with lots of internal or external modulation possibilities. Noisefoc is an experimental Oscillator, good for noise and Pan Sonic style buzz sounds. It's nice as a pure sound source or as a base for Hi-Hat and percussion sounds. Noisefoc is a great learning project, in the manual the basic parts and their functions are explained. It is based around three CMOS NAND gates as oscillators, controlled by potentiometers and a light dependent resistor (LDR). There's an optical representation of the frequencies via LEDs, two mixing circuits (different sound via diode or resistor mixing) to mix the oscillators and a power starving function which makes the device completely out of control. The Microphonic Soundbox is an instrument for experimental sound creation. It features a resonant wooden body equipped with contact microphones, battery-powered low-noise preamps and a variety of sound-generating surfaces, including springs, rods, textured panels and a kalimba. Use it standalone to create textures and samples or pair it with delay and loop-based effects for evolving soundscapes.The Instrument features a range of playable surfaces and objects that allow the creation of unheard sounds and textures. The main components are:• Two metal rods – you can excite them with a stick or similar to get bell-like sounds, or play them with a bow to create ethereal–metallic tones. Pitching recordings down reveals deep metallic drones.• Three metal springs – pluck, pull or whip them to produce vintage reverb-like spring sounds.• Sandpaper surface – scratch it with different objects and materials to create sounds ranging from soft whispering to harsh scraping noises.• Kalimba with 5 strips – play harmonic melodies or use the freely tunable mechanism to explore microtonal tunings. This strips can replace the shorter standard ones of the Microphonic Soundbox and are longer, therefore sound deeper. They fit for the newer Soundbox mk2 Kalimba body, but not for the older ones with Carbon strips.Two of the strips are thicker than the others (1,6 mm instead of 1,2 mm) what results in a further sound variation.The holes in the strips are ment to face towards the player. The Application Putty is designed for mounting contact microphones on a wide range of instruments and surfaces. It provides a strong yet removable bond for reliable positioning and effective sound transmission.Depending on the surface and application time, residues or marks may occur on sensitive materials such as certain wood finishes. Please test carefully before use and avoid leaving the putty attached for extended periods.For best results, use only a small amount of putty. When removing the Contact Microphone, avoid pulling with force – gently twisting it sideways is recommended to prevent damage to the microphone or surface.This item includes 10 cm of Application Putty.
