Befaco is an Eurorack manufacturer that also offers DIY kits, organizes workshops and releases their designs under Creative Commons license.
In February 2010 Befaco was created as an open hardware platform focusing on professional DIY musical hardware, materializing the previous electronic, musical and artistic research of its members.
Our main activity has been developing synthesizer modules in eurorack
format and making them available in workshops. All this research is
published under CC-NC-SA License, so people can download the schematics,
and technical assembly guides, to make their own variations of the
projects for personal and educative purposes. Also build all our designs
during our regular workshops in cities as Barcelona, Madrid, London or
Berlin.
During the past twelve years, apart of these regular four
cities, we have visited cities as Tokyo, Kyoto, Toronto, Montreal,
Chicago, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Lyon, Stuttgart and Amsterdam, amongst
many other European cities.
These workshops are a huge test playground where we can track each module being built by different worldwide users, get direct feedback and quickly improve them with, develop new ones, or adapt these instruments to users demands constantly.
Direct contact with DIY enthusiasts allows an implication of users in the structure, allowing them to design their own modules and develop them in a professional way. This has developed into an incubation environment for several new modular initiatives, allowing different makers to start their own similar projects.
Befaco initiative is possible thanks to the support of Hangar, an artistic production centre in Barcelona, Barcelona city hall and the titanic work by the whole Befaco team.

Chopping kinky is a voltage controllable, dual channel wavefolder.As an unique feature it has a chop out that will choose between both channels with a zero cross detector or an external gate.• A wavefolder converts simple signals into richer and more dynamically changing ones. In contrast to a filter, wave folding adds harmonic content to the waveform. It works by amplifying the waveform until it begins to saturate, then rather than clipping, the waveform gets folded back in on itself.• Each of the module’s two channels has a unique wave folding profile. Crush Delay v3 is a special Echo-Delay unit based on the PT2399 IC, which is able to offer 400ms of clean delay and up to 2 seconds of dirty repetitions, having a special talent to generate noisy-glitch textures. This third version comes with some interesting new features like redesigned VCAs circuits, wider range for clean delay and reduced depth to make it skiff friendly.• The module has two inputs (In and Return) that go to the Delay circuit through a dedicated VCA for each one. The main difference between both inputs is the signal fed into In is going to the Dry/Wet circuit also, not only to the Delay, allowing you to control the balance between the original and the processed signal present at the main output (Out).• The signal is processed by the Delay circuit, which is affected by the Crush section. It degrades the signal at slow rates in different ways, depending on the position of the three Crush switches or by the presence of gate signals at the Crush inputs.• After being processed, the signal is routed to three different paths. The first one goes into Dry/Wet, where it’s mixed with the original input signal (In) before going to the main output (Out). The second one is returned to the Delay circuit through another VCA (Feedback), controlling the number of repetitions of the wet signal. Hexmix System is a six channel performance mixer specially designed for Eurorack.The system has two separate modules, the core of the mixer: Hexmix that has six channels with three band EQ, mute, pan and EQ section on the master, and Hexpander that add three auxiliar sends per channel, PFL, individual outs and balanced output.The mixer has a strong inspiration in classical DJ mixers, providing sharp EQ’s for enhanced performance, auxilliar send for effects and individual outputs to record your performance per channel.The system is designed to be placed in 6U, instead of the traditional 3U paradigm in Eurorack. So we will have every feature for each channel vertically as a conventional tabletop mixing deck.Six channel mixer with three band EQ, vactrol mutes, pan and volume control per channel.Inputs for every channel are located at left side of Hexmix. Each jack is normalized to a VCA Expander connection in the back, so if you have a Hexmix VCA , you will have the output of each VCA to every input. connecting a jack in any input will disconnect whatever is coming from VCA.Gain is set to unity, so it will act as an attenuator of the input signal. Mutes are clickless, as they are vactrol based. This circuit provide some decay on the mutes, rather than a sharp cut.Swithces have latch position and momentary ones to unmute the channel, providing some really nice performative capabilities.EQs are quite sharp (12dB) inspired in classic dj mixers to aggresively cut selected frequencies.Master section has it’s own EQ and volume control for the mix of all channels.
