Synthesized, analog Hi-Hats are pretty fascinating. That’s because emulating any kind of cymbal using an analog circuit is tough since the sound a real cymbal produces is not quite pure noise, but also not really harmonic. Still, a couple of classic drum machines like the Roland TR-606 and TR-808 took their best shot at it, with quite strange-sounding results that have since become iconic in electronic music. Whether you use it for self-sequencing, for adding a dash of randomness to your filter movements, or for rough analog bitcrushing, a sample & hold-circuit can often be the secret sauce that takes your patch from decent to distinctive. That’s why we came up with this super simple JFET-based implementation – and then upgraded it with a couple of extra features like an internal clock generator or a dedicated slew output. Of course, we’ll need an interesting input to sample – which is why you’ll often find sample & hold modules with an integrated noise generator. So we’ll do the same! But instead of just one noise color, we’ll throw in two extra: pink and blue in addition to the standard white noise.We – Erica Synths and Moritz Klein – have developed a series of educational DIY kits under the brand name mki x es.EDU with one specific goal in mind: to teach people with little-to-no prior experience how to design analog synthesizer circuits from scratch. No drum machine is really complete without a punchy, snappy Snare Drum. Together with the Kick, it creates the rhythmic backbone for most grooves. It's christmas time in your modular rack and this year we invented a proper christmas tree module! The LEDs of the tree change color and are used as oscillators to generate weirdo-sound. There are four sections with two LEDs each which modulate each other. You can patch the oscillator outs to the left or right output with mini-patch wires.With this DIY kit you have 2 options:1) The tree can be used standalone with a 9V battery as a simple light effect which is standing on a table etc. In this version there is no audio possible.2) You complete the whole module and solder the tree to the panel. As the name suggests this module can produce sub frequencies of -1 and -2 octaves relative to the square wave signal provided at the input jack.But this is not just a simple SUB generator. It also has a little mixer that will let you add different levels of -1 and -2 octave signals to the original square wave. Horror Show is a 4 HP combined noise generator/digital ring modulator/sub oscillator.Noise generator with filter frequency control. Filter is twin-t type. Infinitely Maybe is a full featured randomness module, with a number of sources of randomness:• White noise• Pink noise• Sample and hold circuit• Random gates circuitAn onboard CV mixer allows you to mix two different sources into the sample and hold circuit. White noise is normalised to CV input 1, Pink noise is normalised to CV input 2Infinitely Maybe has an onboard clock for triggering the sample and hold circuit.
