Chord Organ is the easiest way to get chords from a modular synth!• It's perfectly possible to create chords on a modular synth, but its a pain - lots of tuning and messing about. I wanted to create something as simple as a home organ with chord buttons. Chord Organ is exactly that; the top knob chooses a chord shape, the bottom a root note.• The full story of Chord Organ, including how it was inspired by a Bontempi Organ found in the street, is in this article over on Medium.• Chord Organ and Radio Music are identical modules; you can convert one to the other by installing new firmware over USB - details on how to install the firmware - and go back just as easily.• This video shows what you can do with a Chord Organ in a simple little case. Here the chord shape and root note are sequenced by an expanded Turing Machine and filtered through a God's Box Humpback Filter.• The top knob chooses the chord shape (Major, Minor, Drop 3 9th). 1) Radio Music is a virtual radio module, so it behaves a bit like a radio. It is designed to be a source of unexpected audio, not a drum loop player or a sample mangler. That said, plenty of people enjoyed it for playing drum loops or mangling samples.2) Radio Music has been a popular DIY project since 2014, and has been used by Chris Carter, Russell Haswell, Richard Devine, and Robin Rimbaud.3) In 2017, the module's firmware was completely rewritten and updated, bringing new features including pitch shifting, .wav file support and a new way to configure settings on the module. You can download the latest firmware here, which will run on any Radio Music module.4) On the same site you can configure your Radio Music, changing various internal settings.5) It's a well documented project, with a lengthy Radio Music Wiki and an active issues list for people seeking help with a build.6) The wiki also contains a huge suggested audio bank containing lots of interesting things.7) Like a radio, the module works on a series of banks and stations. Each of the 16 banks can contain many different stations. Each station is an audio file stored in a folder on the SD card. Choose a bank by pressing and holding the RESET switch. Choose a station by turning the STATION knob or plugging a voltage into Station.8) Because the audio streams from the SD card, it can handle long files easily. In the default setting, it switches between long recordings just as if they were radio stations — as if the audio was playing in the background.9) Radio Music runs on a Teensy 3.1 (or 3.2) microcontroller, which is programmed by USB and runs a very well documented Arduino-like language, so it's easy to hack.10) There are multiple alternative firmwares for Radio Music documented in the github, and on Voltage Control Lab including:- Chord Organ is just an alternative firmware for Radio Music, but is also available as a separate module. You can turn a RM into a CO (or vice versa) at any time using a normal Micro USB cable.- Telharfauxnium is an additive synthesis firmware.- James Carruthers has written several different firmwares, including a cool 808 drum machine- I often use this Loop Divider firmware to sync everything to loops in a small case.Note: you need to purchase a MicroSD card and a Micro-B USB Cable elsewhere to set up this module. The Robaux Decision Tree randomly sends a gate to one of three outputs and then to one of three sub-outputs. Generate unpredictable rhythms. You can choose to route a gate to a single random output or play polyphonic gates. Utilize the knob to transition from total chaos to a repeating loop.The latch mode lets you hold an incoming gate. Pair it with a multimode filter to select various filter types. Use it to alternate between a variety of waveforms. The random input routing injects vibrancy into your sound.The DCSN 3 can also function as a traditional clock divider. The signal is split from half to 1/16 on the top four jacks. The Voltage Indicating Multiple is a high performance 2-channel buffered multiple with a 12-segment LED indicator for each channel that attractively shows the approximate voltage at the input and output of each channel. This custom designed, low current draw LED indicator is entirely discrete! The range is adjustable via the two rear trimmers to show a wide range of signals. Common ranges include +/-5V, +/-8V (default “factory” setting) and +/-10V. The Multiple section offers rail-to-rail performance with a <1mV offset between the input and output. These are two simple dual op-amp buffers, with each input transmitting signal to the two outputs below it. With nothing patched to the second input, the signal from the first input is normalized and its two outputs will also output the voltage present at the first Input jack. The Threetom Modular “Mixing Flask” is a utility mixer offering mix-bus limiting and a cornucopia of indicator lights integrated behind a unique chemical lab-inspired front panel.I designed Mixing Flask as a solution to my main three gripes with conventional utility mixers:• Mixing too hot is too easy, leading to hard clipping on the mix-bus. And even when there’s an indicator light to warn you when this is happening, there are no features to actively prevent it.• Utility mixers usually only offer unity gain, so when you have a weak input signal (like a MTM Radio Music), you’re out of luck• They’re nauseatingly boringMIXING FLASK provides solutions to these annoyances in the following ways:• I’ve implemented a soft-clipping limiting circuit on the mix-bus (inspired by DOPPIO). The highest setting prevents the mix-bus from hard clipping altogether in favor of warm saturation.• All inputs have a gain of +6dB allowing you to better equalize between volumes while maintaining a hot mix-bus output• The myriad of indicator lights and front-panel graphics make you feel like a mad scientist in your modular chemical lab. And this is what Ceres is.Its core, the 3360, has been used for years in dozens of devices with remarkable performance. Sum it to a carefully designed 4-layer PCB layout, and we get a super quiet VCA in terms of noise and CV bleeding.The combination of daisy-chained inputs and mixed outputs achieves a vast range of possibilities.
